Leafs Trade Up To Take Schenn
June 20th, 2008 by SteveTrader Cliff made his move. He traded the Leafs 7th pick overall, and either their 60th pick and a 3rd rounder next year, or their 68th pick and a 2nd rounder next year, so he could move up to 5th overall to select Luke Schenn.
Schenn is a physically punishing defensive defender, who stands 6′2″ and 215 lbs. He’s often compared to Adam Foote, and he should solidify the Leafs blue line for the future. He led the World Junior Hockey Championships in +/- this past year at +5. He currently patrols the blue line for the Kelowna Rockets alongside his partner, another highly touted prospect, Tyler Myers.
Expect him to improve the toughness of the Leafs as they morph themselves from the soft, doughy patsies they’ve been for the past few seasons, into the rock hard, nail spitting, ruffians that Fletcher likes his teams to become.
What Schenn does not add to the Leafs is skill up front (he is a skilled rear guard). Hopefully they will be able to pick that up later in the draft… but until tomorrow that will have to wait. That is unless the Leafs trade again for another first rounder.

A great move. As a Leafs fan and a Saskatoon resident, I couldn’t be happier about draft day.

Cliff sends the ultimate first draft message with the drafting of Schenn. The Leafs are rebuilding through the draft and in a few years they won’t be much fun to play against. I can hardly wait ’til next year’s draft.

This was great, you hate it all year watching your team suck, but when the draft comes and you add some nice prospects its all good. Hopefully Leaf fans can tolerate this for a bit.
A couple more years of top 5 picks will be good for us.
