How Stupid IS MLSE?
June 4th, 2008 by SteveApparently they’re pretty stupid.
According to Sportsnet, the deal offered to Ron Wilson would not make him one of the top paid coaches in the NHL. This despite the fact that Wilson is the winningest coach in the league over the past 4 seasons, has the 3rd most wins of any active coach in the league, and has over 1000 games, and 95 playoff games to his credit.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MLSE?
Seriously - they haven’t entered some sort of weird dimensional portal where everyone is desperate to work for the Leafs. If Wilson doesn’t get what he wants out of the job with Toronto, he’ll end up somewhere else, for a nice chunk of dough.
You don’t build a team by coming up short constantly on offers to management. The reason the Red Wings can get away with under paying people is because they’ve been winning for a decade. The Leafs haven’t won anything significant in over a decade. The longer this fiasco goes on, the more disturbing it all gets.
To be fair - it is entirely possible that this is all hyperbole on the part of the press to stir up more interest over the pause that’s occurred. But considering it will all come out in the wash in less than 7 days, why bother? Impatience leaps to mind, and also a large dose of cynicism. Nobody trusts Toronto to make the right move… and why would they?
If this report turns out to be true, Leaf fans can rest assured the misery will continue.

Sounds like MLSE is really committed into bringing this franchise back to respectability.

Who is the top paid coach anyway? Mike Babcock? I read that same blog on the sportsnet page and they couldn’t even provide any more details than that. It would be nice to know who is the top paid coach in the league so we can understand why they are paid as such (was there a bidding war?). Term will also be part of the how it plays out. If the term is 4-5 years, as it has been reported, then that is a long term contract for a coach. If it is 4-5 years, then of course his money would be reduced because he is being provided security.
In any event, just because the Leafs have the money, doesn’t mean they have to throw it around in order to win. What sort of message does that send to the players. Come to T.O. and you will be paid the most in the league? Shouldn’t work like that. Ron Wilson has had a great career. Ron Wilson, has NOT won the cup. It may come down to that. Ron Wilson should be paid competitivly, but like any un-restricted free agent before the lockout…, The leafs don’t want to send the message it is ok ot overpay.
by the way ‘Retarded’ is a politically incorrect term.

Dan,
I’ve got to disagree with you on this point. The leafs DO need to throw money at management. That is EXACTLY the message they want to send to the best men in the business.
The players side of thing is irrelevant because the market is capped, so their values shouldn’t get out of control.
As for “Retarded” being non-PC, I’ll replace it with something else.

ah the PC police.
From Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: re·tard·ed
Pronunciation: ri-’tärd-&d
Function: adjective
: slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development
How does that not apply to MLSE management?

lol…tough to argue with PPP on that one…

Well, Babcock hadn’t won a cup up until last night but it didn’t make him any less of a coach.
The fact of the matter is the leafs aren’t a great organization like the Wings so they aren’t going to attract top coaches or/and or front office people without using their best resource, cash. No cap on your front office.

Steve, have you seen Berger’s latest?

He’s saying the offer was for $600K, which wouldn’t even put Wilson in the top ten.
It sure sounds like the Leafs are only interested in Wilson if it’s at a discount. So why even make the offer? That’s just a head-scratcher, and by “scratch” I mean “slam into keyboard repeatedly”.

Hey PPP, it is also a derogatory name for someone who is mentally handicapped.
It is truly unfortunate that some people can be so insensitive when they use this term. Steve should be credited for his acknologement of the issue.
I’ll drop that issue there.
As for $600k, that is truely shameful if that is the offer. Personally, I can’t see that happening.
I do agree with pouring money into the scouting makes a lot of sense, and have been big on this for a while. Your arguement for the guys in management dose have some merit to it as well. But we are talking about the Leafs here, and it’s hard for them to turn over a new Leaf…. The ghost of Ballard is still in the organization.
